Time Pieces is set inside of a clockmaker shop in a very old part of the city. Not only do the tops of the grandfather clocks become the skyline of the city, but Gonsalves also displays his mastery of combining colors as he blends the light from a lamp on a bookcase into the distant night sky. There is elaborate use of geometry and somewhat of an M.C. Escher feel in this piece, as the famous artist guides the viewer through winding staircases and multiple floors, yet he uses the same floor tiles throughout the piece to achieve an optical illusion. The old man in this piece checks the time, so to speak, opening a drawer on his workbench.
