Fall colors in Hope Valley

  • The best time to visit Hope Valley is in September and October, when the leaves are changing color.
  • There are a number of hiking trails offering beautiful views of the lake in fall. The most famous trail is the Desolation Wilderness Trail, which starts at Lake Tahoe’s southern tip and climbs over 10 miles up to 8,000 feet elevation. It takes about two days to hike this trail if you’re an experienced hiker. If you’d like a more leisurely pace, however, consider taking one of several other trails that have easy access from Hope Valley (such as Cascade Falls Trail). Wherever you hike in Hope Valley you should get a great glimpse of the Fall colors in the aspen trees around Lake Tahoe.
  • There are plenty of places where you can stay overnight in Hope Valley: hotels and lodges near the lakefront offer nice views; many people prefer staying farther away from town so they can get closer to nature; there are also campgrounds available for those who want something more rustic. Apple Hill trip

Apple Hill is a great place to visit in the fall. Located in Placerville, CA, this orchard is about a 1.5 hour drive from Tahoe South and will take you through some gorgeous country. While Apple Hill has been open since July and offers visitors a variety of activities, it’s best known for their annual apple fest held during Labor Day weekend (August 31st-September 3rd this year). The festival includes live music, hay rides, craft breweries and more! In addition to these events there are several family friendly activities throughout the rest of the year including an annual petting zoo that runs from May through October as well as u-pick pumpkin patches.

The best part about visiting Apple Hill is that it’s open through November 11th which means you can still go even if you don’t make it out there before fall ends!

The art that you will find at Marcus Ashley Gallery in South Lake Tahoe is evocative. Many people find that impressionist work has the power to bring emotion to everyday scenarios. We have two modern impressionists represented in our gallery; Steve Barton and Michael Flohr. Their ability to use their painting style to capture the feelings of their topics. Our gallery offers over 30 world renowned artists that will surely bring something exciting to your home or office. Today we will be exploring the works of our impressionists, Steve Barton and Michael Flohr.

Brief History on Impressionism

The style we now know as impressionism began as a movement in the 19h century. The impressionist movement was characterized by the use of deliberate, visibly brush strokes. These are used to express exaggerated lighting, movement and emotion in everyday subject matter.

The term impressionism was coined in reference to Claude Monet’s painting Impression, Soleil Levant(Sunrise) ” Monet would go on to be one the figure heads of the impressionist movement in France. Other famous artists from this movement include; Renoir, Pissarro and Edgar Degas. The impressionists were inspired by the works of painters like Georges Seurat who used small dots of paint to create a more accurate representation of light.

Their works would end up changing the art scene in France forever. Eventually their impressionistic work would be brought to the public in an exhibition put on by Napoleon III. This exhibition would go on to be called the “Salon des Refuses” and was strictly for art that did not fit the standard styles of the day. Impressionism would go on to become a staple in the French art world and has captivated audiences ever since.

Why are we intrigued by impressionist art?

Impressionist artists are often known for their use of color and light, but there’s another element of their work that is fascinating: their use of the unexpected. Impressionist paintings are full of things that don’t quite make sense—a patch of green grass on someone’s coat; an impossibly warm patch of sunlight; colorful dots floating loosely against an otherwise-black background. These seemingly random details stick with us long after we’ve seen them in person or on screen. Why is that?

Often these details aren’t typical things we see every day, they catch our attention immediately. And when something catches our attention—whether it’s through its color or through its oddity—we tend to remember it better than other things we’ve seen before (or since). When we see it the brain feels something that a lot of art might not bring to the table. This is why we love seeing impressionists paint everyday scenes, they often see something that makes an otherwise dull scene something to remember.

Steve Barton

Steve Barton, originally from New Hampshire, learned much of his painting skills from his mother who was also an oil painter. Barton would go on to study at the Rhode Island School for Design. It was in college that Barton was able to further his impressionist style. After graduating, he traveled to the West Coast to broaden his horizons and inspiration. It was in California that Barton’s work took on the vivid, dreamlike quality that we experience today.

Steve Barton is an artist who loves to paint places that he would want to be at the time. He spends much of his time combing the surrounding areas of the California coast for inspiration. Collectors will see his paintings showcasing things like a tropical beach, the mountains, or even just a cozy cabin somewhere. He uses impressionism to bring even more joy to these areas. The way he paints his palm trees and ocean water brings a feeling of tropical vibes to any room.

Steve Barton’s Unique Style

Steve Barton has even taken things a step further with his use of his trademarked “Wavy Frames”. These frames and canvases were originally made by mistake in 1999, but the collector loved it so much that he continued the process. Viewers will notice that Barton’s paintings are stretched in a way that creates movement. The frames themselves are also Wavey and make the painting jump off the wall. These frames coupled with the impressionist use of vivid brush strokes evokes emotion that is often not seen in the art world. The art invites the viewer to jump into it, also the deliberate brush strokes on canvas are striking in their beauty.

Where to find steve barton’s work

Barton’s works are represented worldwide and can be seen anywhere from Hawaii to Puerto Rico. Steve Barton lives in Oceanside with his wife and spends much of his time giving back to the community. Barton also spends a lot of his time in South Lake Tahoe as he owns a home up here and calls it his second home. He often comes into the gallery for spur of the moment painting or just to come in and lend a smiling face to the gallery.

Michael Flohr

Michael Flohr is a true impressionist. From a young age growing up in Lakeside, California he began drawing with the encouragement from his family. They felt like art would be a great outlet for him and they were right. His style is very unique to himself, it is best described as a mix of avant-garde, abstract expressionism and impressionism. Flohr’s early works evaluated the value of texture in paintings and often showcased square brush strokes.

Michael Flohr’s style

As that ability scaled, Flohr began to express himself more through elaborate brush strokes that are longer and show more finesse. This style was something that came with him from childhood when Flohr began his time at the San Francisco Academy of Art University. There he would learn how to bring that true Michael Flohr flavor we see today. In his final year of school he was awarded the Herman Lambert Scholarship at the New York Society of Illustrators, joining the likes of Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish and N.C. Wyeth. He was then selected to showcase his art at the M.H. De Young Museum in San Francisco, solidifying Flohr’s talents in the history books..

Michael Flohr often states that although he learned a lot from his time in school, it was exhibitions that brought him knowledge on how his paintings should feel. While Flohr traveled across the country he would sit in small low lit bars and sketch what he felt from the bar. Many of Flohr’s most famous paintings have been from these bars and from the city streets surrounding them. These paintings often start as simple sketches that Flohr brings to life. Flohr tries to capture the emotions of the space,and  the feelings of the night. Michael then paints the remainder from the memory itself.

Flohr’s Favorite subject

One of his favorite things to paint is his wife Mel, whom Flohr met while in art school. You will often see her as “The Lady in Red”, whether that red be an umbrella, a hat, or a dress you will often see her in his night life paintings.

Michael Flohr work can be found displayed in galleries across both the US and Canada. You will often find him in cafes in San Diego with a sketchbook looking for inspiration for his next piece.

In some cases, every member of a notable family has been recognized for their artistic achievements, as is the case with the four members of the Rozenvain family. Based in Toronto, Canada, Aleksandra, Michael, Miri, and Barak Rozenvain are making waves in the art world with their vibrant nature-inspired motifs. What is an Art Family?

An art family is exactly what it sounds like: a notable family of artists renowned for creating works that are often reminiscent of each other using similar techniques. A well-known example is the Picasso family. Pablo Picasso overshadowed the Picasso family, but his father, Jose Ruiz Blasco, was a notable drawing professor who taught at multiple prestigious institutions. While their art is not reminiscent of each other, his father’s recognition of his talent led him to attend the prestigious Real Academia de Bellas Artes in San Fernando. His family didn’t end there either, as his children Paloma and Claude became designers and photographers.

What Have Art Families Accomplished in the Modern Times?

In the modern era, there have been plenty of families that have contributed to modern art. Families of modern times bled from painting into film, photography, and ceramics. A great example is the Saars art family, who were heavily involved in the Black arts movement in the late 1970s. Their use of mixed media, ceramics, painting, and sculpture impacted the way that millions of people saw race, and their last generation won multiple museum collections. This is a great example of how these artist families can change people’s lives for generations past their original pieces. Now, the spotlight shines on the Rozenvain art family and their beautifully textured artwork, leaving the rest of us wondering where their next artwork will pop up.

Who are the Rozenvains?

The Rozenvains are an art family based in Canada. Their artwork is known for nature motifs, similar painting styles, and vibrant colors that leave a lasting impact. While each family member’s artwork is distinct, Rozenvain art is easily recognizable by its similar color palette and thick oil techniques.

As the patriarch of the Rozenvain art family, Michael Rozenvain definitely made his mark on the family technique. With most of his work being animal portraits or nature scenes, Michael’s thick oil palette gives viewers an illusion of texture and depth, while pops of color pepper his paintings. These pops of vibrant color are seen throughout other Rozenvain pieces, making the feature distinctive of the Rozenvain art family.

Born in Ukraine in 1963, Michael Rozenvain would go on to study at the Art School of Kieve, continuing his studies at the Academy of Applied Arts in Lvov. He met his future wife, Aleksandra, while studying in graduate school. Eventually, the couple would begin to look for inspiration from the cityscapes and nature of Europe. Artist families all draw their inspiration from somewhere, and the Rozenvains parent’s motifs also exist heavily in their children’s artworks.

While the work of Aleksandra Rozenvain has similar recurring motifs to the rest of her family, we see a lot more landscape nature scenes built from square and rectangular shapes. While the bright color palette is still there, as well as the intricate texture, Aleksandras’ work certainly has a streak of individuality. While this isn’t uncommon in art families, this form of pointillism and contemporary impressionism is certainly unique. Her technique is a structured painting with a palette knife.

Like many children from art families, Barak grew up in a creative environment. Through spending hours in the family studio, a love of 3D art, and learning from his parents, he felt influenced to paint the beauty of nature just as his family did. While using vastly different methods, the Rozenvain art texture stays strong in its lineage.

Miri Rozenvain

With similar striking colors, earthy texture, and natural themes, Miri Rozenvain‘s work borrows from all the other techniques of Rozenvain art. Using the colors to highlight the animal’s movement in a very striking way, Miri also builds texture using natural earth and stones. This is very similar to Barak’s method of placing clay and sand in order to create realistic sculptures. Miris’s style is very spontaneous and abstract compared to her other family members, but just as creative and expressive in the end.

Miri recreates a magical experience using her experience at the York University Visual Arts program in 2016. She was also inspired by the time with her artistic family and visiting many museums and international art galleries growing up. Exposed to all of this creativity, Miri used her love for wildlife as fuel to push her art to where it is today.

Alexander Volkov is the present-day master of realism. He paints stunning still lifes and landscapes that often center around themes of rural America, which he calls home. Born in St. Petersburg, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1989 has since built an impressive portfolio of contemporary still-life paintings. His favorite device is the interplay of light and shadow to lend mood and narrative to each piece. The artwork also tends to mimic the sun’s transition and the changes in natural lighting through the day.

Volkov considers himself “self-taught” only inasmuch as anyone who has constantly studied art and artists all his life can be self-taught. He draws inspiration from past masters like Vermeer, Rembrandt, and William Turner, but also from Einstein, Beethoven, and Tarkovsky, as well as the people he knew and grew up with, both artists and otherwise.

Eric Christensen

Eric Christensen is a watercolor hyperrealism artist. The phrase “watercolor hyperrealism” is a bit of an oxymoron, since they’re rarely seen together in the world of fine art. In fact, Christensen is today the only known artist capable of producing hyperrealistic art through standard transparent watercolors. He uses a patented technique to achieve this, which lends his paintings the look and feel of a high-definition photograph.

Over the years, he has built an impressive reputation for showcasing the California wine country. Based in Napa Valley, he creates modern landscapes and contemporary still-life paintings that feel grand and intimate at the same time. They often incorporate a variety of elements including wine, food, flowers, and fruit, all rendered in vibrant, saturated colors.

Michael Flohr
