“Stonington is a small fishing town at the southern tip of Deer Isle, in Maine. At the height of the season, it is a bustling fishing and crabbing community with a few tourists thrown into the mix who are adventurous enough to make it all the way here in search of life the “way it really is.” This is what they find here, sturdy landscape and friendly people, hearty meals and a lot of life the way it is – the sea, the sky, the seagulls, and freedom.” – a memory from Alexander Volkov
For almost two decades now, the Marcus Ashley Gallery has been an active participant in the bustling art scene of South Lake Tahoe. Aficionados of seascapes in the realism style will be treated to one of the largest collections of Alexander Volkov art in the museum-like structure.
Seascapes are among Volkov’s constant tropes, the ocean being his happy place, and Nightfall in Stonington Harbor is one of his magnificent creations in the subject matter. Transposing the scenic calm of the Deer Isle, Maine’s coastal view onto the canvas in all its glory is truly a coup de grace of the Volkov brush. Sharp contrasts between light and dark, dramatic angles, and intense strokes are hallmarks of the artist’s body of work. These are apparent in the movement of harbor lights reflected on the still waters, a horizon hinting at the faint tinges of a receding sun, and the lush greenery.
Nightfall in Stonington Harbor is a realistic oil painting that will make for interesting conversation in the living spaces of a home, at the tables of a fine-dining restaurant, or within the lobby of a luxurious hotel.
