“This is the story of Romeo and Juliet. I stole the idea of paper cutouts from one of my wife’s drawings. Light and faceless, they looked so fragile and innocent, like kids caught in a cruel whirlwind of events beyond their control. They looked so… Shakespearean. – Alexander Volkov
The best place to appreciate and learn about art is at Marcus Ashley Gallery in Lake Tahoe. Its patrons and staff are happy to extend their hospitality to visitors from around the country and world. The gallery takes pride in curating collections from influential artists, including Alexander Volkov art. The artist’s work has been highly regarded for its true-to-life compositions.
An Evening With Shakespeare reveals Volkov’s classic portrayal of light and shadow. The artist positions cutouts of Romeo and Juliet on a chessboard to depict the complex nature of their relationship. Much like the game, the downfall of one of the two players is inevitable. Light filters through the window and bounces off perfectly against the elements in focus.
Notice how the artist was careful to include a reflection in the window of the chessboard and pieces. Using restrained brushstrokes and a precise hand, Volkov stirs up an idyllic mood against the setting sun. An Evening With Shakespeare is available for purchase or viewing at the Marcus Ashley Gallery.
