Flying Over the Poppies (Limited Edition) Todd White Art From Globally Acclaimed Painter Available at Marcus Ashley Art Gallery in South Lake Tahoe

“It was an honor to be selected by Warner Brothers. The impact the film (Wizard of Oz) has had on our culture is amazing. The themes and characters live in our conversations and are a reference point for people all over the world.” – Todd White

Marcus Ashley Fine Art Gallery is a must-see destination for Lake Tahoe tourists. Known for its amiable hospitality, custom framing, and worldwide shipping, it also houses an enviable collection of Todd White art. One of the most recognizable and respected names in figurative expressionism, White was commissioned by Warner Brothers in 2009 to celebrate on canvas the 70th anniversary of the film Wizard of Oz.

Flying Over the Poppies is the astounding result of the invitation. In this piece, the artist contemplates what might have been the landscape of Dorothy’s journey over the poppy fields along Yellow Brick Road. Body language and facial expression are White’s forte, and he deftly uses both to interpret his observations. Adroit strokes combine with a play of brilliant colors on a backdrop of hypnotic flowers in unusual colors and shapes to create a state of sleeping wakefulness. Indeed, the Wicked Witch may have induced a deep slumber, but the heroine’s mind is awake, exhibiting a hint of trepidation over the unknown that awaits. Perhaps even in defiance of the antagonist’s manipulation.

  1. Frank Baum was a master of symbolism and allusion. Todd White pays respect to the legendary author by astutely capturing the controversial scene.
