“In the shadows, a child sits dreaming. The journey begins and in the darkness the child sees the light and from that light comes hope.” -Mackenzie Thorpe
In this limited edition print for sale, Mackenzie Thorpe shows a single, small figure, sitting on an enormous red heart. The child is wearing a dark, hooded duffle coat, typical to Thrope’s work, and is holding a single candle or flame in his hand. The foreground of the painting contains dense brush and trees as if the child is deep in a forest. The light that he carries and the sun peaking through in the background are the only sources of light in an otherwise dark image. The muted sepia tones of the background and the dark forest vines provide a stark contrast to the huge, red heart that Thorpe’s work is immediately recognized for.
Signature to Thorpe’s artistic style, the child is faceless as the viewers are meant to picture themselves or someone they may know in the image, regardless of race, age, gender, or background. The figure is meant to represent every child and is a source of hope or light in challenging times. He is wearing plain clothes, a long dark coat, and sturdy shoes. Although he doesn’t have much, his heart is filled with love that he is ready to share with the world. He looks up into the sky and sits in a playful manner as if he is daydreaming about what his future may hold. Carried by this positivity, He is ready to give his light and love to the first person he meets. We cannot see his face, but his body language tells us that he is happy and hopeful.
Although times might be tough, the child is ready to share his love and light with the world if you just give him the chance to do so. Thorpe’s own childhood was challenging as he struggled in school from undiagnosed dyslexia. He found confidence in drawing and painting which gave him joy and hope for the future. This image shows that no matter how challenging it may be, children always have enormous dreams and hope. It’s a reminder to find that same sense of wonder no matter what stage you are in on your journey.
