About Jon Paul

Originally from New York, Jon Paul spent a good portion of his first 18 years playing indoor ice hockey. At the age of nine his family moved out west to Arizona. Through hockey, Jon Paul was invited to attend a boarding school in Colorado where he was introduced to the outdoors. Along with an amazing curriculum that incorporated the surrounding mountain environment into the learning process, Jon Paul was also afforded his first opportunities to travel to wild places. By the time of his graduation Jon had canoeed the Green River of Utah, interacted with migrating grey whales in Baja, and camped in grizzly country in Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. These experiences motivated him to pursue a major course of study in Biology.

In 1991 Jon Paul graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. After graduating he moved to Lake Tahoe, adding climbing, fly fishing, skiing and any outdoor activities he could to fill his time. Each one of these endeavors opened his eyes to the amazing beauty of wild, pristine natural places.

Jon Paul often found himself saying to his then girlfriend (now wife) “If I were a photographer I would take a picture of that.” After seeing those amazing places with the clarity of a focused athlete, the simple beauty of nature had become ingrained in his mind as a necessary ingredient to health and perspective in life. In 1997 Jon Paul purchased his first camera and began to capture the visions he experienced.

Spending the next two years learning technical basics of photography, Jon Paul did just about everything from greeting cards to weddings, anything that could pay for his film. Soon he became dissatisfied with 35mm photo film and made the move to large format photo film cameras. He honed his focus on landscapes and nature. In 2000 he opened his first photography gallery, a loft in a warehouse in Stateline, Nevada and within a year and a half he moved to his own location in South Lake Tahoe.

After 15 years Jon Paul Photography has established clients in all 50 U.S. States and in more than 15 countries around the globe. Jon encourages us all to join him on his photographic journey as it continues with each photograph he takes.
