"For humans today, the significance of the polar bear is equal to the importance of the Ursa Major constellation to the people of prehistory. The seven bright stars, visible in the upper left side of this painting represented a "she bear" to many cultures. For those in northern latitudes, the asterism's two brightest stars point to Polaris, the northern star, and became a navigational tool. The great bear is also of great spiritual significance in many ancient religions. In Shinto, for example, Ursa Major is a symbol of great Kami or the universal spirit that connects all the world. These bears live at the furthest outposts of our planet, close to the stars and for me represent a great strength and presence in our life on this earth."
