A note from the artist-
Vervet monkeys are the clowns of South Africa. They have little fear of humans and a lot of curiosity, which gets them in trouble. We say them in troupes everywhere, from the wild to the convenience store parking lot. They are very family oriented and co-operate to forage for food. They care for one another and take care of one another. The name of this piece from the fact I have a daughter who always removes the hair on my shoulder, reminds me to check my teeth, comments on my mode of dress and tries to “improve me” in general, all the time. We used to call that “nitpicking” which is exactly what this young Vervet is doing to her mother. I know it comes from love.
