A note from the artist-
My answer to the charging elephant so favored by many wildlife artists. I did not want him to seem so threatening, therefore I chose to place him between some native fabric pieces as if he were entering your safari tent a little uninvited. You can see by his eyes, he is a kind old elephant. The patterns on the fabric are authentic tribal ones, but I enhanced them with gold and copper leaf, another concession to décor and design. I really do love to make my animals into more of a sophisticated design than a snapshot painting.
I also used a great new technique on his hide, in order to get the black lines of the wrinkles to remain. Easy to do if you are drawing with black ink, but not if you are removing the black ink. I placed a piece of white paper with colored chalk on the back all over the face of this board and began drawing using a ball point per wherever I wanted a wrinkle line. After removing the paper, I used a sanding sponge to gently remove the black and it left it in the black indentations left by the pen, similar to scrimshaw.
