In this popular depiction of a musician playing for his own enjoyment, Gonsalves captures the joy of playing for a large audience. In the case of The Performer and his Public this audience is in fact nothing more than the houses that surround his personal rooftop stage, but it is enough for this musician on this night to play for an imagined crowd of thousands. Gonsalves repeats this idea of performing for a pretend audience in his later piece, Woodland Arena.
