In For the Birds, Gonsalves depicts a young woman hanging a bird house from a tree. Barely noticeable, the homes in her neighborhood are also strung to the branches. A neighborhood has taken root – once for the free-flying birds, the houses now find a solid, grounded foundation. Not unlike her winged friends, the young woman enjoys her freedom and transience of youth; yet she, too, will one day grow roots, become grounded, and build her own foundation.
