Michael Parkes art illustrates ephemeral dreams and magical worlds in brilliant colors and context. The Marcus Ashley Gallery celebrates the artist’s work with an impressive display of his sculptures, paintings, and litho prints. Budding and professional collectors will equally take delight in viewing Parkes’s meticulously illustrated oeuvres.

The artist captures his subject matter in opulent settings that often include palatial towers and quarters. In The Court Painter, Parkes sketches two maidens as live subjects for a painting in the works. The dwarfed painter in medieval garb seated on the back of a swan is deeply absorbed in capturing his subjects on canvas. Ethereal tones of gold, porcelain, blue, and red fill the litho print, creating visual depth.

The artist’s litho prints are first sketched and perfected on vellum, a transparent drawing paper. Parkes repeatedly flips the medium over to view both sides, adding or going over his subjects’ details until they align. Once Parkes is satisfied with the results, he transfers the print to limestone slabs using multiple layers of ink. The impressive litho print starts to materialize as the colors take their rightful places across the sketch.

The Court Painter will add a touch of grandeur to a minimally decorated or contemporary room.
