“The desire to create is fundamental to the artist and the act of creation is a metaphysical experience. Painting for me has been a means to describe, record, and explore the universe around me and my relationship with it. It has been, however, my 40-year love affair with stone lithography that has helped me most to define this metaphysical journey.” – Michael Parkes
The Marcus Ashley Gallery is home to magic realism Michael Parkes art, which depicts mystical, philosophical, and mythical themes. In Returning the Sphere, Parkes reveals a bizarre yet powerful motley of characters.
According to Greek mythology, Zeus takes the form of a magnificent bull to lure the Phoenician princess, Europa. Enamored by his impressive build and beautiful features, she mounts the bull before being abducted by the deceptive god.
In an alternate reality, the artist reimagines the princess (the Cretan moon goddess is represented as the sphere) being retrieved by an army led by a powerful angel. The angel and the men ensnare the bull before saving Europa. The artist perhaps visualized the princess being brought home to safety after being taken away by Zeus.
Returning the Sphere is a magnificent litho print to mount in an upscale loft, library, reading room, or boutique.
