Fans of magic realism will find Michael Parkes art an awe-inspiring oeuvre to peruse. The artist is well-known for relying on historic painting methods that give his work a distinct Renaissance finish.
Joan of Arc was a peasant girl who believed she was guided by divine forces. She is famous for leading French troops to victory during the Hundred Years’ War. In Jeanne D’Arc, Parkes portrays a reimagination of the brave warrior on a grand steed. She is accompanied by a mystical figure who appears to be using spiritual intervention to lead the way.
To guide him through the artistic process, Parkes relies on sheer vellum to perfect the subjects of Jeanne D’Arc. He occasionally flips the vellum paper to add or erase details before arriving at the derived results. The artwork is then transferred to a stone surface to create the litho print.
In Jeanne D’Arc, wispy tones of ivory and beige meet rich tones of deep coral and shades of blue. Delicate brushwork captures the saint’s palpable strength as she confidently strides into battle.
