Tucked in the heart of Heavenly Village in Lake Tahoe is the grand Marcus Ashley Gallery. The establishment curates an enviable collection of exhibits from Michelangelo and Dr. Seuss to Michael Rozenvain and Mario Jung. While browsing through the gallery’s fine collection, visitors will come across Michael Parkes art. Known as the master of stone lithography, Parkes is one of few artists who still practice this rare art form.
In An Angel’s Touch, Parkes shares a recurring narrative of an angel bestowing the gift of consciousness to a creature. As lowly as the receiver may appear to be, the artist believes that anything is worthy of consciousness.
The angels he portrays are figures of love and compassion who often protect or commune with animals. In this litho print, the angel bends over a rotund pig as she gently places her finger on his snout. Her brunette curls cascade past her smooth porcelain shoulders. She is as delicate as her touch yet possesses a quiet strength. Parkes relies on deep pastel hues of tan, beige, and cream that perfectly enhance the contours and lines of his subjects.
An Angel’s Touch will be a fascinating addition to a room and a definite conversation starter.
