Tucked in the heart of Lake Tahoe is the Marcus Ashley Gallery, where some of the world’s best art is displayed. From Michelangelo and Dr. Seuss to Todd White and 2Wild, the gallery is home to some of the well-known artists of our time. Visitors enjoy browsing the exhibits of the gallery, particularly the Michael Parkes art.

In Three Leopards, the artist showcases his prowess behind the brush through varying tonal intensities. These delicate layers of paint are applied with light smears that allow the paint to take on a lovely translucent finish.

Parkes touches on themes such as the extinction of several species, undoubtedly caused by man’s thoughtless destruction. The leopards striding alongside the angel-protector appear to be fading in and out of reality, symbolic of their struggle for survival. According to the artist, angel-protectors raise their species right from when they’re young. It’s safe to say that Parkes portrays the two as having a deep physical and conscious connection.

The angel-protector appears to be part-leopard, which reveals her guardian status to the species she closely protects. Subdued tones of sandy brown, ivory, and dusty gold create a powerful composition. Parkes’s ability to create a riveting tale through strong characters comes through beautifully in Three Leopards.
