Daughter of the Phoenician King Agenor, Princess Europa has been the subject of several Renaissance paintings. In Europa, Parkes recreates the fable of her being kidnapped by Zeus, the King of Gods. Legend has it that the princess was playing with friends on the shores of Phoenicia when Zeus first saw her. The god was so enamored by her beauty that he took the form of a white bull with bejeweled horns and an impressive build.
In this piece, Europa is seen sitting on Zeus, disguised as the hybrid beast. The princess’s fascination for the beast’s unusual beauty can be felt through this painting. Parkes uses an ethereal palette of muted and bright pastels to capture Europa’s goddess-like features and dreamy surroundings. That ephemeral moment before Zeus takes Europa away to Crete is depicted beautifully by the artist.
