“My hope is to unite us through the eyes of children” – Mackenzie Thorpe
In this limited edition print for sale, Mackenzie Thorpe illustrates a single child, in his signature style, surrounded by red floating hearts. The child has a huge ear to ear smile and the big head that is so easily recognizable in Thorpe’s work.
The big head is meant to show that children are born without any prejudices or fears; We are all born equal. They are new, uncorrupted, and their heads are full of endless possibilities. Children are open to whatever might come their way. It’s only as we grow older that we become narrow and close minded. Thorpe reminds us to keep our heads as big as possible, to marvel at the beauty of nature, and to continue to dream. He believes that the fear we have is all between our ears, it’s not real. Instead of passing it on and continuing to live in it, we should be sharing the joy of the new and unknown.
The child in this image is surrounded by vibrant red hearts that seem to float through space in a playful manner. Paired with the child’s huge smile, the hearts fill the artwork with happiness and joy. There are a few green branches framing the image and the moon shines brightly in the upper corner. The night sky is dotted with stars in the background, giving the artwork a dreamlike feeling. The child’s face is left blank, without any recognizable characteristics or features. Thorpe wants the viewers to be able to picture themselves or their own children in the image, regardless of race, gender, or background.
Thorpe’s much-loved pictures are rooted in authenticity, expressing an emotionally tender world and a universal message of hope that connects with people across cultures. This limited edition print, along with several other Mackenzie Thorpe artworks, is available for sale at Marcus Ashley Gallery in South Lake Tahoe.
