In this limited edition bronze sculpture for sale, Mackenzie Thorpe shows fourteen men speeding along a road during a bicycle race. A small dog runs with the pack, keeping pace with the bicyclists. When he was creating this piece, Thorpe was inspired by the Albert Einstein quote: “Life is like riding a bicycle – in order to keep your balance you must keep moving”.
The bicyclists’ posture suggests that they are moving with considerable speed. This is a challenging feat to communicate in a hard, bronze medium. The figures are bent over their handlebars and their coats are billowing behind them in the wind. Even the dog leaps and bounds along with the figures.
Thorpe’s iconic style and recognizable characteristics from his paintings are echoed in his sculptures. The figures are all wearing the simple coat and sturdy shoes that Thorpe paints in his work, particularly for working class men. They do not have faces as the viewer is meant to see himself in the figures; In this way, they represent any and every man. This sculpture does not have any color in it as Thorpe believes that sometimes added color takes away from the message. He wanted the pure simplicity of the medium and the message to shine through.
Thorpe’s work is rooted in authenticity, packed with emotional expression and speaks of hope, love, struggle and challenge – values which align perfectly with an intense race. Bicycles have held a powerful position in Thorpe’s artwork and his established collections of cycling images resonate with enthusiasts around the world. They symbolize hard work, fun, challenge, camaraderie, joy, and they provide an insightful commentary on life.
When creating this piece, Thorpe thought about the broader impact of a bicycle race. In addition to the inspiration provided by top athletes speeding through the countryside he also thought about the feelings of the spectators. Perhaps a young child is inspired to learn how to ride or sets his sights on competing in the future. For Thorpe, that is what the race symbolizes, being moved by the sheer spectacle and the impact that it has on not only the riders, but everyone who comes in contact with it.
