“It’s the hardest thing to make bronze, an incredibly hard metal, look soft. That is what I wanted to achieve with Sitting on Love and I am thrilled with the final result, each piece looks gorgeous and truly individual. It’s not until you pick it up, do you realize how heavy it is” – Mackenzie Thorpe

In this Mackenzie Thorpe limited edition bronze sculpture, a tiny, childlike figure sits atop a gigantic, vibrant red heart. He casually relaxes as if he has all the love and time in the world. Signature to Thorpe’s artistic style, the child is faceless, as the viewers are meant to picture themselves or someone they may know in the image, regardless of race, age, gender, or background. He is meant to represent every child and is a source of hope or light in challenging times. He is wearing the plain clothing and sturdy shoes that Thorpe often depicts in his work. Although he doesn’t have much, his heart is filled with an enormous amount of love that he is ready to share with the world. The image is literally built on a foundation of love.

Thorpe’s own childhood was challenging as he struggled in school from undiagnosed dyslexia. He found confidence in drawing and painting which gave him joy and hope for the future. This image shows that no matter how challenging it may be, children always have enormous dreams and hope. It’s a reminder to find that same sense of wonder no matter what stage you are in on your journey. Although times might be tough, the child is ready to share his love and light with the world if you just give him the chance to do so.

Thorpe likes to work in bronze because it allows him to play with making soft and delicate forms in a hard metal medium. The strong material also allows for the child to be wearing a metaphorical suit of armor at a time in his life where he may be particularly vulnerable. His heart is protected as long as he is able to continue to give his love freely and abundantly.
