“As far as I can remember, there’s always been a dog in my life.” – Mackenzie Thorpe
In this Mackenzie Thorpe limited edition bronze sculpture for sale, a single figure sits in a comfortable lounge chair with his faithful dog resting at his feet. The man is wearing plain clothing and a cap, similar to Thorpe’s portrayal of working class men in his other artworks. He is casually holding a mug, suggesting that he is either getting ready for a long day of work with his coffee and is saying goodbye to his dog or he has just returned home. The dog sits next to the man with his paw on his foot and his chin resting on the man’s leg. It’s an extremely tender and touching scene, highlighting the special bond that exists between humans and their animal best friends
Thorpe has a fond memory of his dogs growing up and throughout his life. Most recently, he adopted two American cocker spaniels from a trip to Miami. Animals are a recurring theme in his work and oftentimes he draws people in his own life as the characters. He first received attention for his work through his ‘square sheep’ that are meant to represent his family members. In other images, he may draw close acquaintances as giraffes or other friendly animals.
Thorpe likes to work in bronze because it allows him to play with making soft and delicate forms in a hard metal medium. The attention to detail in this piece is spectacular. Every wrinkle, fold, and individual button on the man’s shirt is visible, creating more of a fabric feeling. The man lovingly looks at his dog and scratches his head. The emotion and love between the two is palpable as the dog seems to embrace the man’s leg. The man is also wearing the sturdy, large shoes we see in Thorpe’s work. They are meant to remind us to stay grounded and to never let our egos get too big no matter what may change in our lives.
Thorpe draws inspiration from his own life experiences and his own emotions, expressing whatever he is feeling at the time of the artwork’s creation. The sculpture may be inspired by Thorpe’s own dogs or a dog he had previously owned.
