“The strength of this piece lies in its simplicity. I who have nothing to give, give you my love” – Mackenzie Thorpe
In this Mackenzie Thorpe limited edition sculpture for sale, a single figure stands with a massive red heart held high above his head. The figure is wearing plain and simple clothing, with the study shoes and big feet that are signature to Thorpe’s artistic style. He creates his figures in this way to show that they do not come from much, but they still have infinite amounts of love to give to anyone they meet.
Thorpe created this sculpture in his studio by using a wire armature and moulding clay over it for a couple of months. The artwork gradually developed and came to life, until he felt that it was finished. Thorpe commented that the figure just seemed to grow out of the clay and say, here I am. He was also clear that he wanted the heart to be a rich and deep warm red, similar to the hearts seen in his paintings and drawings. He uses simplicity and materiality in this piece to communicate an overwhelming message of love.
Thorpe has an unparalleled vocabulary for love through his use of his iconic red hearts. At times they are so large that they overtake the entire image, and at other times they can be so small that they seem to be an afterthought. There are some works where the heart is a vibrant bright red that almost glows, and others where it is a deeper tone. He is trying to show that love comes in many different forms throughout our lifetimes but that it is always present, no matter what, even when we think it might not be there. He feels that love and hope are the most important things that we can bring and give to others on our journey in life. Even when it seems that we have nothing else to give, we can still give our love freely to others.
Thorpe’s much-loved pictures are rooted in authenticity, expressing an emotionally tender world. They always carry a universal message of hope that connects with people across cultures.
