“A child carrying or pulling a big heart is a theme I have explored many times before. This search for love, our need for it and the power of it, is apparent in lots of my work, not just the more symbolically obvious images.” -Mackenzie Thorpe
In this limited edition sculpture for sale, Mackenzie Thorpe shows a young child sitting with his back against a vibrant red heart. He extends a single hand to feed two delicate, blue birds on the ground near his feet. Another bird rests on his hand, feeding directly from his palm. The enormous red heart is signature to Thorpe’s style and encompasses the majority of the artwork, as if the child has a huge amount of love to give to the birds.
The child is intentionally left blank and faceless, so that the viewer can picture himself in the image. He’s wearing very simple clothing that can be seen in numerous other Mackenzie Thorpe artworks. The dark, black hooded duffle coat and sturdy shoes contrast with the bright white of the figure. He doesn’t have much and sometimes, Thorpe paints his figures with so little that they do not even have a shadow. This image is meant to show that even when we don’t have anything to give, we can still give our love and kindness. This child may be poor and come from humble roots, but he is willing to give everything he has to the birds as it fills him with joy.
With this sculpture, Thorpe wants to communicate that the darkest times are behind us. He believes that hope will get us through whatever struggles we are having. Thorpe wants to show that although someone’s situation may be bleak, they can always have hope and continue to give love to everyone they encounter. The child brings the red heart along with him on his journey and is ready to give his love to anyone that he meets along the way. The image is tender and kind as he gently feeds the birds.
