”It’s the hardest thing to make bronze, an incredibly hard metal, look soft. This is what I wanted to achieve and I am thrilled with the final result.” – Mackenzie Thorpe
In this limited edition bronze sculpture for sale, Mackenzie Thorpe depicts a central figure cuddled up on a hill with his dog, taking a peaceful nap. The child’s eyes are closed and his animal best friend is watching over him as he sleeps. The hill is decorated with several heart shapes, further emphasizing their love for eachother.
Thorpe likes to work in bronze because it allows him to play with making soft and delicate forms in a hard metal medium. Several of Thorpe’s easily recognizable themes are seen in this piece. The first is his iconic child with a big head and an ear to ear smile. For Thorpe, the big heads symbolize the innocence of children, new and uncorrupted. They are full of endless possibilities and open to whatever comes their way. It’s only as we grow older that we become narrow minded and closed. He challenges us to “keep our heads as big as possible”. The child is also wearing the sturdy, large shoes we see in Thorpe’s work. They are meant to remind us to stay grounded and to never let our egos get too big no matter what may change in our lives.
Thorpe has a fond memory of his dogs growing up and throughout his life. Most recently, he adopted two American cocker spaniels from a trip to Miami. He often illustrates the special and loving bond between humans and their animal best friends. Animals are a recurring theme in his work and oftentimes he draws people in his own life as the characters. He first received attention for his work through his ‘square sheep’ that are meant to represent his family members. In other images, he may draw close acquaintances as giraffes or other friendly animals.
