Lovers Entwined

“Together one day soon we will all meet again and god willing, embrace those we love. Together we will watch poppies blowing in the wind, Hear the sweet sound of birds singing, Bask openly in the warmth of the sun. This will happen and when it does, let’s pause, take a moment and appreciate the sheer wonder of it all.” -Mackenzie Thorpe

In this limited edition bronze sculpture for sale, Mackenzie Thorpe shows two figures, each holding the end of a gorgeous ribbon that forms a heart shape in between them. One figure appears to be a woman as she has longer hair and is wearing a dress. The other figure is wearing a plain, long coat that Thrope typically uses to illustrate working class men. They both wear the big, sturdy shoes that are signature to Thorpe’s style and a reminder for us to stay grounded or to never let our egos get too big for our shoes.

The figures do not have faces as the audience is meant to picture themselves in this image. Thorpe wants the couple to represent someone that the viewer knows, maybe a reflection of his own relationship, his parents, or a friend. They are not given any recognizable features as they are meant to be a metaphor for a loving relationship, regardless of age, race, or background. Each figure lifts one leg into the air as if they are dancing or about to run into each other's arms. The sculpture is filled with joy and their love is palpable.

Thorpe likes to work in bronze because it allows him to play with making soft and delicate forms in a hard metal medium. The focal point of this piece is the stunning heart in the center of the two figures. They each hold on to one end of the ribbon as if they are pulling it apart to embrace in the center. The ribbon tails unfurl and wrap around their bodies in an effortless breeze. Perhaps the most intricate detail of this piece is that the central heart is formed in the negative space between the ribbons. Thorpe’s artwork is rooted in authenticity, expressing an emotionally tender world. This piece carries a universal message of love and joy that transcends cultural boundaries and can be embraced by any viewer.
