One figure appears to be a woman as she has longer hair and is wearing a dress. The other figure is wearing a plain, long coat that Thrope typically uses to illustrate working class men. They both wear the big, sturdy shoes that are signature to Thorpe’s style and a reminder for us to stay grounded or to never let our egos get too big for our shoes.
The figures do not have faces as the audience is meant to picture themselves in this image. Thorpe wants the couple to represent someone that the viewer knows, maybe a reflection of his own relationship, his parents, or a friend. They are not given any recognizable features as they are meant to be a metaphor for a loving relationship, regardless of age, race, or background. Each figure lifts one leg into the air as if they are dancing or about to run into each other's arms. The sculpture is filled with joy and their love is palpable.
