“As far as I can remember, there’s always been a dog in my life.” – Mackenzie Thorpe
In this Mackenzie Thorpe limited edition print for sale, a small, black dog walks merrily along as his owner trails behind with a bright red ball in his hand. There are five additional figures walking behind him, each holding a dark umbrella. All of the men are wearing the traditional black duster coats and big, sturdy shoes that Thrope is known for drawing. The red ball is very similar to Thorpe’s iconic, vibrant red hearts that are instantly recognizable in his work.
In this image, he wanted to start with a plain, white piece of paper and really illustrate his feelings in an artistic way. He wanted to show that the weather is cold and rainy without being too literal. The figures are huddled under their umbrellas, clutching their coats tightly in the wind. He created the animation and the feeling that the wind was blowing and the figures were getting wet. They’re trudging along, trying to get out of the storm as quickly as possible. However, the tiny dog is carrying on, completely disregarding the weather. He’s holding his head high and is just happy to be along for the journey. Thorpe wants people to experience this type of raw happiness and emotion. He believes that no matter what your situation is, you can still carry on with joy and love.
Thorpe has a fond memory of his dogs growing up and throughout his life. Most recently, he adopted two American cocker spaniels from a trip to Miami. He often illustrates the special and loving bond between humans and their animal best friends. Animals are a recurring theme in his work and oftentimes he draws people in his own life as the characters. He first received attention for his work through his ‘square sheep’ that are meant to represent his family members. In other images, he may draw close acquaintances as giraffes or other friendly animals.
