“I try to express through my work the thoughts, feelings and responses to what I experience and see and feel; always attempting to create with freshness and spontaneity. No matter how many times I create something, I try to bring something new to it, to develop an idea and meet the challenge.” – Mackenzie Thorpe

In this Mackenzie Thorpe limited edition print for sale, a small child sits alone in an overgrown forest as the moon shines brightly in the distance. The figure is wearing the dark hooded duffle coat that is instantly recognizable in Thorpe’s work and he is holding a small red heart. Thorpe often leaves his figures faceless as the viewers are meant to picture themselves or someone they know in the artwork. The child is meant to represent everyone and every child, regardless of race, gender, age or background.

The foreground of this image is filled with lush greenery and cattails that may be found near a lake. Thorpe draws a lot of inspiration from the North Yorkshire countryside where he grew up, so this location may be inspired by a trail near his home. The figure sits next to a dirt path on a rock as if he has paused for a minute to relax on his long journey. The background of the image is framed by a large tree and dense shrubbery. Thorpe believes that we must bring love with us on our journeys, even if we do not know the destination.

Mackenzie Thorpe creates his artworks with the purest pigment pastels made in England. This artwork features stunning greens and jewel tones with a vibrant moon set in the dark evening sky. He uses his hands and fingers as extensions of the pastel sticks, employing a subtle blending of tones. This technique is apparent in this print as the light of the moon effortlessly blends into the sky and brightens the entire image.

This work is particularly interesting in Thorpe’s oeuvre as it is more painterly than some of his other figurative works. The majority of Thorpe’s art expresses love and hope, however, he does not shy away from the darkness that also exists in life. He tries to illustrate, as authentically as possible, the realness and grittiness of everyday existence.

The gorgeous scenery in this Mackenzie Thorpe artwork is not dissimilar to something you may see near our gallery in Lake Tahoe.
