“Always sow the seeds of love. Not seeds of war. Not seeds of greed. Seeds of love, for no return. Give what you’ve got or it is for nothing. And you’ll get everything in return.” – Mackenzie Thorpe
In this limited edition print for sale, Mackenzie Thorpe illustrates a central figure, surrounded by three small children who are all holding hands in a circle. The children are drawn in his signature style, wearing dark hooded duffle coats and sturdy shoes. They do not have a face or any other recognizable features as Thorpe wants the viewers to picture themselves in the image, regardless of race, age, gender, or background. Each child is holding one of Thorpe’s instantly recognizable red heart shaped flowers. He firmly believes that children are the ultimate source of love and that they will give it freely if they have the chance.
This image has a simple color palette and is one of Thorpe’s more graphic compositions. The background is a plain white, providing a stark contrast to the figures who are all dressed in black. Thorpe has created a blank canvas so that it is more relatable for the viewers. They may be able to see themselves in this image, or someone they know, and can use their imaginations to create the environment.
The figures are drawn with big feet, a reminder for Thorpe of his humble roots. He believes that your ego should never be bigger than your shoes. Oftentimes he draws his characters with so little that they do not even have a shadow. He wants to express that even though they may seem like they have nothing else to give, they can still give their love, joy, and positivity freely.
The figures in this image appear to be a father and his children. Thorpe began working with his own father in a shipyard when he was a teenager. This artwork is meant to highlight the loving bond shared between a parent and child. It’s a special relationship that Thorpe often discusses as his own father developed Alzheimer’s and the roles eventually reversed. He realized that the bond was always there even if they were too busy to immediately recognize it.
