“Put on your Sunday Best, live your dreams, and change the world” – Mackenzie Thorpe

In this Mackenzie Thorpe limited edition print for sale, a central figure stands alone in what appears to be a barren, grey wasteland. The ground is strewn with grey rocks and the background has a few mysterious, industrial buildings; One appears to be a distant factory with a burning smokestack and small fire.

The child is alone in a grey and bare landscape, but she has dressed up in her mother’s clothing. She is wearing a dark dress, reminiscent of the duffle coats that Thorpe draws in many of his works. Her mother’s high heels are clearly too large for her small feet. Despite her current situation, she is pretending to be in another world.

The child is confident in her stance. She’s even brought along a handbag and a stroller or buggy for a doll. Thorpe wants to emphasize that she is trying to turn her grey world into a better place and that is something that anyone can do. He gives her an escape. She’s wearing bright red shoes that clearly stand out against the dark color palette. They’re inspired by Dorothy’s shoes, so she can go off to the Land of Oz anytime that she wants, she just has to use her imagination.

In Thorpe’s work, there is sometimes a darkness and grittiness, as he does not shy away from the struggles of everyday life. He wants to emphasize that you need to experience the pain and the darkness to fully be able to appreciate the light. His much-loved pictures are rooted in authenticity, expressing an emotionally tender world and always emphasizing a universal message of hope that connects with people across cultures.
