“I, who have nothing, bring you my love so that you will grow in a world of hope” – Mackenzie Thorpe

In this limited edition Mackenzie Thorpe print for sale, a small, childlike figure sits alone, high on the branch of a black, barren tree. He is wearing the dark, hooded duffle coat and sturdy shoes that Thrope typically includes in his works. Oftentimes, he draws these figures with so little that they do not even have a shadow. On the far right branch, a single, red heart blows in the wind, just out of reach. In Thorpe’s iconic style, the figure is drawn without a face or any recognizable features as the viewers are meant to picture themselves. or someone they know, in the image.

The child sits on the edge of the tree branch, suggesting that many times in life we are faced with insurmountable decisions. Just like coming to the edge of a cliff, what we decide in these moments is entirely up to us. Thorpe reminds us, “Don’t fear the fall, it is the only way to fly”. The child has his knees pulled up and his arms tucked in as if he is making a serious decision or waiting out a storm. He could climb down the tree trunk and leave or he could take the risk and climb further out on the limbs to reach the dangling red heart.

The foreground of this image is filled with a thick underbrush drawn in green pastels that complement the fluffy blue clouds in the background. The clouds seem to clear as the sun shines through, suggesting that the worst challenges are behind us and a new day is coming. The majority of Thorpe’s artwork expresses love and hope, however, he does not shy away from the darkness that exists in everyday life. He tries to illustrate, as authentically as possible, the realness and grittiness of our world while still providing a message of hope.
