“I draw Middlesbrough through my memories, through the eyes of me as a child and a young man, when men seemed bigger and stronger than giants.” – Mackenzie Thorpe
In this limited edition print for sale, Mackenzie Thorpe shows a larger than life ship, surrounded by huge blue cranes at the dock. Scattered far below are dozens of tiny workers that really put the sheer size of the boat into perspective. Thorpe’s work is immediately recognized by the use of his signature red pigment; In this piece, it is utilized in the hull of the ship. He draws the majority of his inspiration from experiences in his own life. As a child, he saw many ships, such as this one, in the shipyard near his hometown.
Mackenzie Thorpe was raised in the industrial town of Middlesbrough (North Yorkshire) in the 1950s and his experiences provide him with inspiration for his artwork. His father worked as a laborer and his mother was an auxiliary nurse. He struggled in school throughout his childhood as he had undiagnosed dyslexia. However, Thorpe found confidence in drawing and painting. When he was a teenager, he began working with his own father in the shipyard and assisting with the family rent and bills.
The scale of this artwork highlights the fact that Thorpe draws directly from his childhood memories, through the eyes of himself as a child. He was in awe at the size of the ships when he visited as a small child. The men and the equipment seemed gigantic compared to him and like something that he could never achieve. Thorpe has worked in pastels since 1989, as he loves the immediacy of the medium. He expertly blends the city in the background and the hull of the ship, giving the image dimension that seems to reach out beyond the flat paper.
Thorpe’s much-loved pictures are rooted in authenticity and imagination.
