“When day are dark and waters run deep. Together with you I am safe. Lifted from the shadows and bathed in precious light. Such is the power of your love.” -Mackenzie Thorpe

In this Mackenzie Thorpe limited edition print for sale, two figures sit on the edge of a dock overlooking a serene lake as the sun sets in the background. Presumably, the figures are a parent and child or a husband and wife, modeled after the artist and his own relationships. The larger figure has his arm around the smaller figure in a nurturing embrace or gesture of comfort. In the foreground there are several red poppies blowing in the wind that are reminiscent of the heart shaped flowers usually seen in Thrope’s work. The tall evergreen trees embrace and frame the two figures as they enjoy an intimate sunset moment.

Thorpe’s paintings are rooted in authenticity, they express a universal message of love and hope that every viewer can relate to. He paints exactly what he is feeling, giving his work an honest and immediate feeling. This piece is particularly interesting as it exemplifies his more painterly style, in contrast to his figurative works. He uses his hands as extensions of the pastel sticks to subtly blend the tones throughout, creating a soft landscape. This expert blending can be seen in the sunset and the gentle reflections in the lake. The quick movement and brushstrokes in the trees clearly stand out against the calm lake and the sunset provides a central light from the background.

This artwork highlights the loving bond shared between two individuals. Thorpe often discusses that his inspiration for his work comes directly from his family, his childhood, and the relationships he’s had throughout his lifetime. When he was creating this image, he may have been fondly recalling a memory with a family member, his own wife, or one of his children. The figures are alone together, enjoying each other’s company and the serene landscape.

The breathtaking evergreen trees surrounding the quiet lake in this image are very similar to the foliage you will see in and around Lake Tahoe where Marcus Ashley Gallery is located. In addition to several Mackenzie Thorpe artworks for sale, Marcus Ashley Gallery exhibits over 40 of the most iconic artists of our time. The gallery has been locally owned and operated for 18 years, providing luxury customer service, as well as any recommendations for upcoming community events.
