“I draw Middlesbrough through my memories, through the eyes of me as a child and a young man, when men seemed bigger and stronger than giants.” – Mackenzie Thorpe

In this Mackenzie Thorpe limited edition print for sale, a single figure stands against a stark white background looking directly up. This piece is particularly interesting as the viewer appears to be in a higher position, looking down on the figure. He is dressed in all black and has on dark shoes, perhaps lace up sneakers. We, as the viewer, are in his father’s shoes, looking down at the young child.

When Thorpe draws figures in this particular style, they are inspired by his own childhood. This figure may be Thorpe himself or a child that he knew. Growing up, he would play with the neighborhood children often pretending to be American cowboys or British football players. They didn’t have much, maybe one pair of trousers and a hat, so they had to use their imaginations to escape to a more exciting world. A red ball is in the bottom right of this image as if the father has caught his child mid play. The red pigment is signature to Thorpe’s style as we see it repeated in nearly all of his artworks. It’s meant to represent love, joy, and happiness.

Thorpe draws a lot of inspiration from his own family and his experiences as a child. In this image, he may be saying that his dad’s shoes seemed so big that they would be impossible to fill. The child looks up with wonder, thinking he may never be that big or capable. He really admires his father with a sense of love and respect. The child and the background of the image are left blank as the viewer is meant to use his imagination to further relate to the image. Thorpe wants the viewer to feel a sense of nostalgia and commerardie, regardless of his home country or background.
