“The idea is that we are all born the same; we are all equal. As we grow, we impose restrictions on ourselves and on our children. We are not born afraid of the dark. We are not born racists. We are not born frightened of spiders. We learn to be scared of new adventures, of new foods, of new experiences, and so our world shrinks.” – Mackenzie Thorpe

In this Mackenzie Thorpe limited edition print for sale, two young children lift their heart shaped flowers into the air in celebration. These figures have become some of Thorpe’s most iconic and recognizable figures in his artwork. The children are drawn with round heads and large, ear to ear smiles. They’re intentionally left blank, devoid of color and features, so that the viewers can picture themselves in the image, regardless of race or gender.

In this image, the background is a simple blue dotted with several clouds and the two central figures dance through a field of heart flowers. If you look close enough and use your imagination, you may be able to see shapes or images in the clouds. More than a dozen bees fly around in the foreground, giving the image a nostalgic feeling of a childhood summer day with a close friend. The first time Thorpe drew a bee, he wanted to put a little “bzzz” into the picture because this sound is such a recognizable part of life.

Thorpe firmly believes that we are all born equal and that the fear we learn is all between our ears. It’s not real, yet we continue to live it and pass it on for generations. Instead, we could be welcoming happiness and sharing joy of the new and the unknown. For Thorpe, the big heads symbolize the innocence of children, new and uncorrupted. They are full of endless possibilities and open to whatever comes their way. It’s only as we grow older that we become narrow minded and closed. He challenges us to “keep our heads as big as possible”.
