“A child carrying or pulling a big heart is a theme I have explored many times before. This search for love, our need for it and the power of it, is apparent in lots of my work, not just the more symbolically obvious images.” – Mackenzie Thorpe
In this Mackenzie Thorpe limited edition print for sale, a young child is seen sitting on a step, feeding a long line of birds of all sizes and shapes. They are lined up in single file, patiently waiting their turn. Behind the child, is a huge red heart, signature to Thorpe’s style, that fills almost half of the entire artwork.
The child is intentionally left blank, so that the viewer can picture himself in the image. He’s wearing very simple clothing, a dark hooded coat and plain sturdy shoes. He doesn’t have much and sometimes, Thorpe paints his figures with so little that they do not even have a shadow. This image is meant to show that even when we don’t have anything else to give, we can still give our love and kindness. This child may be poor and come from humble roots, but he is willing to give everything he has to the birds as it fills him with joy.
The landscape is minimal in this piece, but the sun is coming out from behind the voluminous storm clouds. The darkest times are behind us and hope is shining through, showing that brighter days are ahead. Thorpe’s works often include a glimmer of hope, like the sun coming through the clouds, or bright pops of color. He wants to show that although someone’s situation may be bleak, they can always have hope and continue to give love to everyone they encounter.
