“I often paint factories with smoke pouring from the top. The smoke is a symbol of warmth and comfort because if the factories are working that means there are jobs for the men, and if they have jobs they can provide food and warmth for their families. They stand tall and proud in the landscape and are a symbol of the industry that keeps these people alive” – Mackenzie Thorpe

In this Mackenzie Thorpe limited edition print for sale, several workers trudge through a landscape entirely devoid of color towards a factory in the distance. It may be in the early hours of the morning, as the sky is dotted with stars and the sun has not yet risen. The ground is white, perhaps fresh with newly fallen snow.

Thorpe was raised in the industrial town of Middlesbrough in the 1950s where his father worked as a laborer and his mother as an auxiliary nurse. He was no stranger to the plights of the working class and this is a consistent theme in his work. Although it was a tough period, he acknowledges the strong feeling of community spirit amongst the workers, as well as the loneliness and isolation.

Mackenzie Thorpe entered the workforce as a teenager, first in a shipyard, then in a foundry and as a laborer. His mother required him to begin to pay for his portion of the rent and family bills. He struggled to keep his job and eventually lost it, admitting that he was depressed until he was eventually admitted to an art college where he could pursue his lifelong dream of becoming an artist.

This work is particularly interesting in Thorpe’s oeuvre as it is more abstract and painterly than some of his other figurative works. The quick movement and brushstrokes in the sky really communicate the mixed emotions of the factory workers. Although they may be struggling, they are still able to provide for their families. They continue on to fulfill their duties, much like Thorpe continued to work until he was able to attend an art college.

This Mackenzie Thorpe artwork is available for sale at the Marcus Ashley Gallery in Lake Tahoe, along with artworks by 40+ of the most famous artists of our time.
