Some of Thorpe’s favorite childhood memories are of growing up in Northern England and playing American cowboys in the streets of his neighborhood. The cowboy offered a playful world of imagination and adventure for the young boy.
This image combines both Thorpe’s heritage and the American cowboy. The nearly blank faces suggest that the viewers are meant to see themselves as the figures. Our imaginations can run wild. Are they children playing dress up in their cowboy costumes or are they in the wild west, stopping for a quick dinner together?
The cowboys are dressed plainly, in black and white clothing with patterned neck scarfs and classic hats. They seem surprised, as if the viewer has caught on to their secret meal. The soft sepia tones of the sunset paired with the light smoke of the fire create a warm environment for these figures. They seem to be enjoying a nice dinner with each other after a long day’s work.
