“I see life like a journey. We all know the beginning. What we don’t know is the end” – Mackenzie Thorpe
In this limited edition print for sale, Mackenzie Thorpe illustrates a small figure flying in a red airplane against a pure white background. As a child, Thorpe always dreamed of red planes and cars, wishing that he could escape in one like this. Now, he can live that dream by drawing it.
This image shows that we do not always know where we are going in life, but we can bring love and fun with us on the journey. Thorpe’s iconic red pigment contrasts with the pilot’s blue scarf, billowing in the wind. The background is left intentionally blank so that the viewer can envision the pilot’s adventure wherever they may choose. As long as we have our imagination and creativity, we can travel anywhere that our hearts desire.
Mackenzie Thorpe was raised in the industrial town of Middlesbrough in the 1950s and remembers the compulsion to draw from a very early age. As a child, he would seek out whatever raw materials he could find, sometimes even eye-shadow or lipstick illicitly obtained from his mother’s makeup bag. Thorpe struggled with dyslexia throughout his childhood and found confidence in painting and drawing. Imagery such as this big red plane helped him to make sense of his world and to create something to escape the challenges of his daily life.
