All Our Yesterdays

“The fragility of the soul is like a fish in a glass jar. You must protect it at all times, nurture and care for it. You must also be aware that once your soul is out of the jar, it is vulnerable to the dangers of the world.” -Mackenzie Thorpe

In this limited edition print for sale, Mackenzie Thorpe shows two figures fishing on a dock overlooking a lake as the sun sets in front of them. Presumably, the figures are a father and son, modeled after the artist himself. The boy wears a light green, striped shirt, and his father wears a dark hat and duster. The sepia tones of the forest in the background give the image a nostalgic feeling, as if we’re remembering something from a bygone era.

A recurring theme in Thorpe’s artwork is a small fish in a glass jar, as seen next to the young boy. This image is meant to represent the boy’s soul as it is nurtured and protected by the father while he is still a child. However, once out of the jar, he is vulnerable to the hardships of the world.

Thorpe began working with his own father in the shipyard when he was a teenager. This artwork is meant to highlight the loving bond shared between a father and son. It’s a special relationship that Thorpe often discusses as his own father developed Alzheimer’s and the roles eventually reversed. He realized that the bond was always there, even if they were too busy arguing or making excuses to see it. The relationship and love between a father and son goes on beyond anything else.

The breathtaking evergreen trees growing on the mountains in the background of this image are very similar to the foliage you will see in and around Lake Tahoe where Marcus Ashley Gallery is located. In addition to several Mackenzie Thorpe artworks for sale, Marcus Ashley Gallery exhibits over 40 of the most iconic artists of our time. The gallery has been locally owned and operated for 18 years, providing luxury customer service, as well as any recommendations for upcoming community events.
