“When I stumbled upon this old empty house in Maine, I felt as if I had known it before. I imagined the souls who lived here, young and old, their daily routine of getting up in the morning and looking out to sea, the flow of the seasons, the flow of time…

Who were these people and where did they go? Or are their spirits still there, returning every time when the wind from the sea blows through the empty rooms? – Alexander Volkov

Contemporary, avant-garde, modern, and abstract art are just some of the kinds of collections that one can find at the Marcus Ashley Gallery. For over 18 years, the gallery has sourced and curated the works of famous artists, both locally and internationally. The patrons take pride in displaying some of the best works of our time, including Alexander Volkov art.

In Returning, the artist paints a lone house by the sea in Maine, nestled in an overgrown patch of wild grass and flowers. The house calls to him and Volkov imagines what life was like for the house’s past occupants. The artist ponders about how they would’ve spent their days and if spirits haunt the vacant rooms.

Set against a breathtaking view of the sea and clear blue sky, the house that once was filled with laughter and joy now lies abandoned, rife with memories and tales of what once was.

Volkov’s knack for creating a story that makes one mull over the details at length is evident in this piece. Returning will look right at home over the mantle or by a window in an upscale or quaint space.

This piece and other works of Volkov can be viewed at or bought from the Marcus Ashley Gallery in person or online.
