“There is a unique warmth and comfort in the moonlight. The inspiration for the clouds in this painting came from El Greco’s View of Toledo, which is far from peaceful. But strangely, the silent battle of light and dark in the sky had a very calming effect as if the past and the future were fully present in that moment.” – Alexander Volkov

Art from the Marcus Ashley Gallery always finds a home, whether it leaves with a tourist or an avid collector. The gallery’s collections, including Alexander Volkov art, speak to viewers in a way that connects them to the piece. It is this very nature of art that draws us to the stories they tell.

Volkov’s relationship with light and shadows began while studying physics at Leningrad State University. As he matured into an artist, so did his perception of how these two important elements work together.

Volkov paints Night Road as a nod to El Greco’s controversial yet powerful piece, View of Toledo. Much like El Greco’s painting, this piece reveals the battle of light and darkness. In comparison, Volkov paints with gentler, restrained brushstrokes that soften the effect compared to the original work.

The dramatic intensity of El Greco’s work appears mellowed in Volkov’s comforting composition. As witnesses of this profound display of light and darkness, a smattering of stiff, leafless trees fills the canvas. One can almost feel the wind picking up momentum as the clouds swirl and clash overhead. This breathtaking scene can be viewed at length at the Marcus Ashley Gallery.
