“A long long time ago… last Friday, or however that saying from the children’s story goes, a girl abandons her violin practice to come back with a bunch of flowers she just picked in the garden.

In the blink of an eye, the years pass and she is gone again. Married, working somewhere far far away, the violin and other unimportant things, forgotten. Gavotte. A medium-paced French dance, popular in the 18th Century.” – Alexander Volkov

Whether online or in-person, the Marcus Ashley Gallery creates an immersive, memorable experience for visitors. The gallery is home to some of the best local and international talents. Its highly trained staff can offer input on Alexander Volkov art. His works are a proud addition to the gallery’s rich collection.

The artist draws inspiration from the 18th Century French dance (gavotte) that peasants often enjoyed performing. The movement sways between a quick and slow tempo, which Volkov adapts through his painting, Gavotte. An abandoned violin sits in its case while freshly plucked flowers lay on a chair. A music book that was once the center of attention now lies untouched.

The artist paints a story of a girl who was once a budding violinist. She abruptly ends music practice one day to pick flowers from the garden. From that moment on, her life swerves in a different direction. Her choices, just like time, mature far too rapidly. And the things that once held pride of place in her life now collect dust.

Volkov conveys deep, relatable emotions through a bittersweet composition. His works  are on display in quaint and luxurious public and private spaces. Gavotte and other pieces by the artist can be bought from the Marcus Ashley Gallery.
