“A violin practice interrupted. All of my kids tried some form of music or another. Both Alice, my oldest, and Nick, my youngest have played the violin for a number of years. This is Alice’s violin on the floor, a bit of Kreisler music and lilac in May.” – Alexander Volkov

The artist gives us a glimpse into the life of his kids and their brief time with music in Interlude. Volkov paints a sunlit room with a violin case placed on music sheets at the foot of a wooden chair. Lilac flowers, freshly picked from that morning, occupy the chair. Their intense hues of purple and green pop against the muted palette of the composition.
This scene is a memory of things both old and new and of people moving from one source of pleasure to the next. Interlude will envelop a room with a calming atmosphere that will be welcomed during moments of quiet reflection.
