One focal point of Pulling Strings is set on a stage, where a group of people fly their brightly colored kites high into a cloudy sky. Looking down on the participants, mythological deities grow out of the gathering thunderheads. From above, the gods orchestrate the movements of the kite-flyers, like puppets on string. One interpretation of this work is that above the realm of humanity, there is a greater force at work, influencing our lives down to our very movements. Again, Gonsalves shows us his variety of talents: he captures the essence of a linear, geometric architectural style, and draws a beautiful contrast with the billowing clouds.
